Quality label ADR and roses

Each of us, gardeners, knows a lot about roses, about their biology, about their preferences. There are many associations of roses in the world – from world to regional. We all know about different classifications, about the awards of roses. But, to be honest, we most often buy because we like the rose flower of this variety. Then we think about frost resistance and disease resistance. This article will tell you about ADR roses.
ADR roses are those varieties of roses that have passed, pass and will undergo torture under difficult conditions. In 1950, Wilhelm Kordes and his friends founded the General German Certification of Roses. Her main task is to identify truly worthy varieties of roses and assign them the ADR sign. The German Nursery Association, rose breeders and independent testing stations and nurseries are now under this sign.
To get the ADR mark, the rose grows “by itself”: minimal care is provided for it and medical chemistry is not used. Each variety is tested for several years and only a few pass the exam, and receive their quality mark from the meticulous Germans. Up to 50 new varieties of roses are received per year. 11 experimental stations located throughout Germany, and their employees carefully monitor each rose and record all changes. Here are the characteristics for which “supervision” is established:

  • Winter hardiness
  • Power of growth
  • Leaves
  • Flower shape
  • Flowering and its duration
  • Coloring
  • Aroma
  • Independent abilities to purify from the defeat of diseases (regeneration)
  • General form
  • Plant height
  • Plant width
  • For climbing and climbing roses – long shoots

After the rose’s positive passage of all the above signs, this rose gets the legal right to show off the ADR sign. Believe me, if a rose could tell about those “tortures” through which it passed, then, translated into human language, it was simply left to fend for the environment with a sharp temperature change, naked, without water and food.

This is not all, of course, varieties of roses ADR. In general, in tests participated, for 2015, inclusive, more than 1200 varieties of roses. And as you can see, only a few are tested by cold, hunger and beast. Can I follow the ADR mark when buying a rose? Not only possible, but necessary. The only “but” – not all breeders are part of this association, and their roses pass this test.
